Weekly Roasts: Halbstark and Modus
Discover a well rounded Brazilian coffee from Halbstark, and a funky Nicaraguan coffee from Modus with unconventional tropical notes.
Dear coffee lovers,
Roasters Dark Arts and A Matter of Concrete recently joined forces to launch CONTACT—a one-off collaborative pop-up in London. Designed and built by formd, the multi-day event featured branded merch, retail coffee from both roasters, and freshly brewed cups served on site.
In other exciting news, legendary designer Jony Ive has officially joined OpenAI. Best known for his iconic work at Apple—think the first-generation iMac and first-generation iPod—Ive’s influence on design is undeniable. I’m eager to see what he creates next.
For today’s roasts, I’ve tracked down a balanced Brazilian coffee from Halbstark in Detmold, Germany and an unusually funky Nicaraguan coffee from Modus Coffee in British Columbia, Canada. Let’s dive in! 👀
The daily sipper
From Halbstark, we’re featuring the Sitio Amoreira from Brazil as our clean and balanced selection. Mauricio Scalco is the producer of this small plantation lot (called a “Sitio”) in Poço Fundo, which produces less than 500 bags of coffee per year.
You can expect a well rounded cup with notes of caramel, hazelnut, nougat, and dried fruit from this naturally processed roast. For brewing, I’d suggest using a Hario V60, French press, or an AeroPress. It would also be fantastic for espresso drinks with its chocolatey, nutty characteristics.

The wild one
For this week’s funky pick, we have the Hiro—a naturally processed coffee from Nicaragua by Modus. Produced by Alex Medina, Modus gives us a look into his holistic approach to farming coffee:
Alex is known for his thoughtful approach to farming, emphasizing both efficiency and environmental stewardship. He carefully designs his coffee plots and trails to minimize disruption to the land, aiming to create a system where both the coffee plants and the surrounding ecosystem can thrive.
With this roast, you’ll experience more tropical (even boozy 🍷) notes of kiwi, cherry jam, and pinot noir, which is somewhat unusual for this origin. I’d suggest brewing up this exciting coffee on a Kalita Wave, an Origami Dripper, an AeroPress (inverted method), or as a Japanese iced pour-over.
